Before choosing to become a full-time composer, Jan Martin Smørdal (b. 1978) worked as a musician within improvisational music, and with pop/jazz and avant-garde-bands. Smørdal’s background as a band musician has made him look at all the performers he works with as important for his expression. He is also engaged in what creates and defines what rhythm is. In the past couple of years, Smørdal’s work has been inspired by a swarm of phenomena. He works with the relationship between the individual and the group, and his music swaps between the static repetitive, the atmospheric – even the poetic, like the way one comprehends standing still and movement in flock patterns.
