Karl F. Gerber (b. 1954) was born in Lörrach (Germany), he played electric bass guitar at the age of sixteen. While still a student at the technical high school, Karl studied musicology in Freiburg, Germany. He continued with jazz by studying double bass with Adelhard Roidinger. Experiments with mathematical composition in real time began in 1984 on C64. His live-algorithmic performance “Improvisation with integers” was a co-improvisation with the University of Michigan Dancers, ICMC in 1998. For him, using the computer to improvise meant for editing formulas on the screen. “Beautiful Numbers” was awarded a prize in Bourges.
