Paul Clift (b. 1978) is an Australian composer. He obtained a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Columbia University, a Master’s of Music at King’s College, London and a Bachelor of Arts at the Monash University Conservatorium. He also completed the IRCAM Cursus de composition et d’informatique musicale. Current projects include the new work “Fata Morgana” for a trombone quintet commissioned by Mike Svoboda for Les Trombones de Bâle, and “Colours are Like Memories of Other Colours” for a string octet for the JACK and MIVOS Quartets. Paul’s music often attempts to make abstract associations with linguistics, modernist literature, rock music, and extra-European musical traditions. His compositional outlook is marked by formative studies with George Benjamin, Jean-Luc Hervé, Fred Lerdahl, Philippe Leroux, Fabien Lévy and Tristan Murail. Paul is also the Artistic Director of neuverBand (www.neuverband.ch), a new-music chamber ensemble based in Basel.
