The Väägvere Pasunakoor was founded in 1839. Their most famous conductor was David Otto Wirkhaus (1837–1912) – a musician, orchestra conductor and composer. With Wirkhaus as the role-model and advisor, about one hundred orchestras were founded in Estonia. He ordered the instruments and sheet music, conducted and organized joint performances, conducted the brass band at the 2nd to 7th Song Festivals (1879–1910) and local song festivals. David Otto Wirkhaus conducted the Väägvere Brass Band from 1851–1912. The historical orchestra had close ties to the Tartu Municipal Music School where many of its musicians came from. The orchestra is proud of its historical name and presents concert music with a preference for Estonian composers. There are currently 30 musicians in the orchestra and the conductor is Priit Sonn.
