Foen nóre (White Land, 2020, premiere) is an expression derived from the language invented by J. R. Tolkien and translates as “White Land”. The composition was originally inspired by Alina and Czeslaw Centkiewicz’s book about Roald Amundsen and his voyage to the South Pole. However, the piece follows the story very loosely, focusing more on creating a musical image of a voyage to areas yet to be discovered. (Madli Marje Gildemann)
Medica (from the Lyrica archive, 2017–2021). Lyrica is my recording project which I started several years ago, where I invite people to sing the Latin names of their chosen medicine. And the piece Medica is based on the selected voice recordings from the Lyrica archive. The musicians in the piece are instructed to follow the melodic line of the voice with various group and timbre variations. The vocal recording was done by Kestutis Pleita and he chose to sing these substances: Nimesulidum, Compositum, Rutosidum, Metamizolum Natricum, Midazolamum. (Arturas Bumšteinas)
Silhouettes. Behaviours (2015) is written in Tuscany during the Inaudita masterclass and is inspired by the warm Italian summer nights and hills. Different sonic bodies, characterised by movement and individuality of character, surface their contours out of the static, dark nocturnal atmosphere. (Linda Leimane)
not wind, fire is inspired by the poem “The Song of the Flute” by the Persian mystic and poet Rūmī (1207–1273), which was published in Mahamood Jamal’s English translation in the book Islamic Mystical Poetry (Penguin Classics, 2009).( Antoine Beuger)
Ensemble U: is the most active and renowned contemporary music ensemble in Estonia. The collective boasts a sensitive sound, willingness to experiment with bold new ideas and the ability to perform even the most demanding repertoire without a conductor. U: has performed both in Estonia and at important international festivals abroad. Their repertoire covers the classics of contemporary music as well as experimental compositions. Among other things, the ensemble focuses on performing compositions that require improvisation and irregular interpretation of notation. The ensemble plays Estonian music and also commissions compositions from foreign composers. This time, U: is tackling two tasks at once – one reaching back to the cancelled concert of the Estonian Music Days 2020 and the other involving our Baltic neighbours. Also, the broadcast of the festival will also reach the audience of the GAS festival in Sweden, being part of the GAS festival’s Baltic music program. A double helix indeed!
