The Estonian National Male Choir is one of the most renowned and prestigious male choirs in the world. The choir was founded in 1944 by Gustav Ernesaks, a key figure in Estonian choral music. Over the decades, it has been led by conductors such as Harald Uibo, Uno Järvela, Olev Oja, Kuno Areng, Ants Üleoja, Ants Soots, Kaspars Putniņš, and others. Since the 2011/2012 season, the choir’s artistic director and chief conductor has been Mikk Üleoja.

The choir’s repertoire spans from Gregorian chant to 21st-century music. Alongside works by Estonian composers, the choir has performed compositions by globally renowned figures such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Otar Taktakishvili, Gavin Bryars, and Giovanni Bonato. Contemporary music plays an increasingly significant role in the choir’s repertoire and seasonal programming.

The choir regularly records for Estonian Public Broadcasting and has collaborated with esteemed record labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Finlandia, Alba Records, GB Records, Virgin Classics, Aurora, Ondine, Toccata Classics, and SOOND. In 2004, the choir won Estonia’s first Grammy Award in the choral music category for its recording of Sibelius’ cantatas. Over the past decade, the choir has released seven albums, with the first—Galina Grigorjeva’s In paradisum—receiving the Best Classical Album award at the 2015 Estonian Music Awards.
